BSD 220 Petition

In July 2026, Families for 220 Technology launched a petition requesting four changes for the upcoming academic year. These requesets were selected amont many because they 1) were backed by research as beneficial to children, 2) had widespread support among parents, and 3) were operationally feasible to implement in the 2026-2027 school year. The petition gathed more than 1,000 signatures in just five days.

To summarize our requests of Dr. Winkelman and Barrington school district 220:

  1. Increase Transparency Through Grade-Level Device Monitoring at th district level
  2. Keep Student Devices at School for Kindergarten Through Third Grade
  3. Create Screen-Free Lunchrooms for middle school
  4. Establish Grade-Specific Daily Instructional Screen Time Limits

On August 11, 2026, the administration sent a district-wide email outlining technology changes for the 2026-2027 academic year. While there were some small changes made, the majority of the requests in our petition are not addressed. We have not yet received any feedback from Dr. Winkelman or the BOE as to why.
